New plays by the hottest playwrights in the country
All Readings are free with first-come, first-serve open seating. Reserved seats can be acquired through a donation to the festival.
The SC New Play Festival will occur Aug 12-14.
The festival will feature readings of Kate Hamill's The Scarlet Letter, directed by Shelley Butler, Kareem Fahmy's Dodi & Diana, directed by Adrienne Campell-Holt, Adam Ben-David, Christyn Budzyna, and Jessica Penzias' musical From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, directed by West Hyler, and Samantha Miller's Dragonsoul Offline.
Kate Hamill was named Playwright of the Year by the Wall Street Journal in 2017, Kareem Fahmy was the Co-Founder and Chair of the Middle Eastern American Writers Lab at the LARK in NY and DODI & DIANA was a Finalist for National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center. Composer Adam Ben-David is one of the most in-demand Broadway conductors and musical directors and his impressive list of Broadway credits includes Book of Mormon, Jersey Boys, Spring Awakening, Wicked, High Fidelity, The Light in the Piazza, Bombay Dreams and Aida. Samantha Miller is a member of the Writer’s Room at Bay Area Children’s Theatre and simultaneously toures as a performer with Kaiser Permanente Educational Theatre. DRAGONSOUL OFFLINE was selected as a winner of the ReImagine: New Plays in TYA grant, sponsored by the Kennedy Center, WriteNow, and the Children's Theatre Foundation of America.
Broadway Masterclasses taught in small groups from Broadway veterans
Each Masterclass is only $75 and space is very limited.
A small group of 15 performers will get a 90-minute masterclass with Broadway veterans Richard Blake, Shelley Butler, and West Hyler (accompanist will be provided). They can choose to hone their audition pieces or do a deep dive into performing their favorite musical theater song and learning the thoughts, overarching ideas, and technical skills needed to take a song to the next level of performance. Richard, Shelley, and West will share Broadway acting and auditioning secrets and teach methods for turning their presentation or audition into an authentic, meaningful and vital performance.
Song Interpretation, Taught by Richard Blake: Richard Blake has performed in over 12 Broadway Shows, including Wicked, Jersey Boys, A Bronx Tale, and Hairspray.
Perfecting your Audition, Taught by Shelley Butler and West Hyler: Shelley and West have been on the directing teams for 6 Broadway Shows, including Jersey Boys, Guys and Dolls, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Beautiful; the Carole King Story, and Cirque Du Soleil’s Paramour.
Closing Night Cabaret from TONY-Nominee Jarrod Spector and Kelli Barrett
Tickets are $75 with no food and drink minimum. Hear the stars of Broadway in a 180 seat venue where every seat is within 30 feet of the stage.
“Inside Broadway” is a combination of a cabaret-style performance paired with an “Inside the Actor’s Studio” type-interview with Broadway celebrities Jarrod Spector and Kelli Barrett. The performers will tell stories from working on the Broadway productions of Les Misérables, Jersey Boys, Beautiful, The Cher Show, Rock of Ages, and more and then give the audience a chance to hear songs from some of those shows performed live.
Spector was nominated for both a Tony and an Outer Critics Circle Award for his performance as Barry Mann in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. He made his Broadway debut as Gavroche in the original production of Les Misérables and went on to play a record-breaking 1,500 performances as Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys on Broadway as well as originating the role of Sonny Bono in The Cher Show. Barrett is a stage and screen actor with credits in Apple TV's Dickinson, Marvel's The Punisher, and the Paramount+ series Younger. She also starred in the original Off-Broadway cast of Rock of Ages and the original Broadway casts of Baby It's You!, Zhivago, and Gettin' the Band Back Together.
